How many times have you played a game and been bored to tears by the wooden blocks that represented your character or resources? Let's face it, we've come a long way since games like Sorry! We aren't forced to use the same roll-and-move mechanic, so why use the same boring pieces?
Thankfully, like-minded game companies have just the answer. I'll start this list of interesting game pieces and tokens with the one that caught my eye today: Bag of Cthulhu tokens - I imagine some of you are overjoyed to see these. The rest of you are probably thinking "what in the world is a 'Cthulhu'?!" All you need to know is that it's a really cool looking mythical being, now available as a bag of miniatures with all the usual tentacle-headed goodness - but really small! The bag actually contains two sizes of Cthulhu miniatures, so it can be used in a variety of games as pieces. That is, if your mind can handle the shock of witnessing such a being! Zombies!!! Bag o' Babes - There are several bags o' minis for the Zombies!!! board game series, but the Bag o' Babes is just the most amusing to me. I laugh and joke about the Bag o' Babes every time they come in, making sure to make a ridiculous voice when I talk about them. All that aside, the Bag o' Babes (and likewise, the Bag o' Glowing Zombies and Bag o' Zombie Dogs) are really awesome accessories. You can use them not just for the Zombies!!! game they are made for, but any time your adventure needs a little brain-eating action. They come unpainted, so if you're the type that likes to custom-paint your miniatures, you've got plenty of opportunity to detail them with as much rotting flesh as you want. Meeples - Okay, so that's not what the manufacturer calls them, but anybody who plays a Eurogame more than once knows what a 'meeple' is: Miniature wooden people! But there's much more than just people. May Day Games has come out with several different token sets for use in all your favorite Eurogames. They make your average farmer meeples, food and resource token 'vegiteeples', and various livestock 'animeeples'. So if you got Agricola and were upset to find ugly blocks and discs to represent food and animals, you can now replace them with 'meeples' of appropriate shapes! Chessex Glass Stones - Alright, so I started this by talking about tokens that aren't boring, and some of you may think a plain old glass stone is worthy of yawns, but I think the glass stones from Chessex are just stunning! They're best used as counters for games that aren't kind enough to have scoring track, or to keep track of various stats in an RPG, but these little stones just look cool. You can get solid-color bags of them, or get a variety of colors with the Mana Pack. They're all translucent, so a pile of these stones in a well-lit room can create a really interesting blend of colors. If you're a person with a jar filled with random dice for gaming, you really should get another jar filled with generic tokens like these. There's no reason to be satisfied with the boring little pawns that may have come with your game. So next time you break out that old board game, why not try swapping out Colonel Mustard in favor of a Cthulhu statue or a wooden pig? by: World At Play Games |
